MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO–(Marketwire - June 17, 2010) - In the battle against high calorie, greasy foods, Extreme Pita moves to the frontline with a mission to feed the men and women of the United States Armed Forces.

The Canadian franchisor recently opened the first of two restaurants slated at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, California, home to one of the military branch’s largest regiments. With approximately 30,000 residents on base, Extreme Pita is geared up to feed their need for fresh, healthy and convenient options.

Located at Desert Winds Golf Course on Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, the new restaurant is the Canadian franchisor’s first of two locations opening on base. The second restaurant is slated to open at the base’s Home Store Building in early August.

“As we continue to grow our brand in various markets across the United States, Canada and internationally, we are thrilled to open our very first military concept,” said Alex Rechichi, Co-Founder and CEO of Extreme Pita. “We look forward to providing our healthy options to the men and women serving in the United States Armed Forces.”

Positioned in a niche between monster fast food outlets and fast casual dining environments, Extreme Pita continues to offer increasingly busy Americans convenience and value with its large selection of fresh and nutritious pita sandwiches assembled from the freshest ingredients.

Unlike traditional fast food restaurants and sub shops, Extreme Pita does not offer foot-long loaves of bread with just the typical options for filling. Instead, they offer a 2,000-year-old traditional bread staple – the pita – and feature a “no rules” menu that customizes every rolled pita to suit the individual tastes of its health conscious customers. Only offering non-processed cheeses, meats, vegetables and sauces, all pitas are served fresh or sauteed in water, not oil, right in front of the customer.

To augment the market’s growth, Extreme Pita is seeking single- and multi-unit franchisees, as well as area developers, to develop the local Extreme Pita network. The average cost to open an Extreme Pita is between $200,000 and $270,000 with a franchise fee of $20,000.

For franchising opportunities, contact Sean Black at (888) 729-7482, ext. 14 or seanb@extremebrandz.com. For International franchising opportunities contact Mark Cunningham mcunningham@extremebrandz.com

About Extreme Pita

Extreme Pita was co-founded by Alex and Mark Rechichi in 1997. Their desire was to provide a product that would compete against traditional fast food concepts. Right from the start their idea was simple – sell fresh and healthy food. After a great deal of research and experimenting, Extreme Pita became the answer to this quest. Today the company boasts more than 235 locations in North America and is experiencing a double digit growth rate. For more information on Extreme Pita, visit www.extremepita.com.

Mississauga-based Extreme Pita will be celebrating the re-opening of its restaurant at Clarkson Crossing this weekend, offering half-priced pitas on Friday and Saturday and free pitas for one year to the first 25 customers on Friday.
Former Toronto Argonaut football players and members of the 2010 Argos cheerleaders will be on hand both days to celebrate the grand reopening.
Extreme Pita will also be donating $500 to the Children’s Wish Foundation. Since partnering with the national charity a year ago, Extreme Pita’s parent company, Extreme Brandz, has donated more than $6,000 toward providing children living with high-risk, life-threatening illnesses the opportunity to realize their most heartfelt wishes.
The 1,200 sq.-ft. restaurant now seats 26 and has been completely remodeled with new tables, a more contemporary color scheme, expanded kitchen area and the addition of Purblendz all natural, pure fruit smoothies.
The newly-renovated restaurant will also serve as a corporate training store for new franchisees from across Canada and the United States.

Snohomish County Business Journal

LAKE STEVENS — Jon and Bridgit Newmark were looking to add to their two successful franchise holdings here when opportunity knocked in the form of Extreme Pita.

Jon Newmark said they wanted a third shop of some kind within the limited geographic confines of the Lake Stevens area, but it didn’t make sense to open another Subway.

Extreme Pita’s concept of fresh, healthful food prepared as customers watch, much like in their Subway shops, piqued the Newmarks’ interest. They spent six months studying the operations of Washington’s only other Extreme Pita in Canyon Park before they signed to open their new 30-seat restaurant in Frontier Village at 621 Highway 9 NE.

Extreme Pita had a grand opening event on May 14 and 15, during which customers received half-price pitas all day. The first 25 customers in line received cards granting them free pitas for a year. Bridgit Newmark figures that’s a good investment and will generate new customers far beyond the 25 who get free pitas.

“Eating healthy is the wave of the future,” she said.

So far, the Newmarks say business has been steady. “I see all thumbs-up from customers,” Jon Newmark said.

Bridgit Newmark is surprised by the variety of customers who come through the door: lots of seniors who come after church on Sunday and lots of families with kids.

The Newmarks have lived in Lake Stevens for eight years and both have management backgrounds. Jon Newmark worked in upper management with Domino’s Pizza in the Denver area. Bridgit Newmark opened the first nine Blockbuster Video stores in the Seattle area.

Extreme Pita has 16 full-time and part-time employees. The Newmarks plan to train their Subway general manager in the operations at Extreme Pita.

The Newmarks’ restaurant represents the start of Extreme Pita’s expansion initiative, which calls for as many as 25 restaurants throughout Washington in the next five years.

“After years of tremendous success in our native Canada, we’re proud to have successfully crossed over into the United States and extremely excited about bringing our fresh and healthy pitas to Lake Stevens,” said Alex Rechichi, co-founder and president of Extreme Pita.

Featuring a “no rules” menu that customizes every rolled pita to suit each customer’s taste, Extreme Pita serves all pitas fresh or sauteed in water, not oil, as the customer watches. Sandwich options include tuna, steak and ham, and vegetarian options including falafel and hummus. Jon Newmark pointed to the segregated grill that separates meat and vegetarian items.

The Newmarks’ long-term goal is to create a management structure so they can focus on the big picture more as supervisors to keep their business ship running smoothly. That, and finding a balance between work and pleasure.

Jon Newmark said they’re not interested in expanding beyond the three stores they now have.

“We want to come across as the community’s ‘pita place,’ ” he said.

Extreme Pita is taking advantage of real estate opportunities which has accelerated its growth in the past two years, shooting from 17 to 32 U.S. units. The Mississauga, Ontario based brand plans to open 30 restaurants here next year, said vice president of U.S. business development Ray Zandi. A big factor in their expansion push is the recent availability of locations in one of Extreme’s most favored locales – university cafeterias, where coeds wolf down the chain’s $7 - $9, high-flavor-profile, pita wrapped creations. “Millionaires are made in this economy,” Zandi said. “Now’s the perfect time to turn this into a $1 billion success.”

Continuing to set a new bar in convenient, healthy dining, Extreme Pita announces the opening of its newest restaurant in Charlotte. Located in Ballantyne Village, the new restaurant is the Canadian franchisor’s first franchise location in the area and part of an expansion initiative that calls for 15-20 restaurants throughout the greater metropolitan area in the next five years.

Extreme Pita will be hosting a grand opening event January 29-30, during which time customers will receive half-priced pitas. In addition, the first 25 customers will receive free pitas for an entire year.

“We’re extremely excited about bringing Extreme Pita’s fresh and healthy menu to Charlotte,” said Tracy Olson, owner and operator of the new restaurant. “We look forward to feeding the local appetite and answering the call for healthful quick serve alternatives.”

Positioned in a niche between monster fast food outlets and fast casual dining environments, Extreme Pita offers consumers convenience and value with its large selection of fresh and nutritious pita sandwiches. Featuring a “no rules” menu that customizes every rolled pita to suit the individual tastes of its health conscious customers, Extreme Pita serves all pitas fresh or sautéed in water, not oil, right in front of the customer. Sandwich options range from tuna, steak and ham to vegetarian options, including falafel and hummus, among others.

According to Olson, Extreme Pita’s fresh and healthy menu is keeping the burgeoning franchise ahead of the competition, emphasizing that while the down economy has forced some consumers to reduce their frequency of eating out, others are simply looking for more healthful and cost-conscious options.

“The current economic climate presents a great opportunity for us, as consumers are constantly making trade-offs and looking for value when it comes to their dining options,” she added. “While many consumers are downgrading from casual dining to QSR, they prefer not to compromise their choice in food. Good economy or bad, customers want to enjoy foods they crave without sacrificing freshness, nutritional value and taste.”

Over the past year, the Canadian franchisor and operator of more than 275 restaurants in the United States and Canada under the brand names Extreme Pita, Mucho Burrito and Pureblendz, opened 46 new restaurants throughout North America in 2009 and plans to open more than 100 additional restaurants in 2010 worldwide.

Extreme Brandz also has plans to expand internationally and will look to grow in the Middle East, Asia and Eastern Europe in 2010 and over the next five years.

“The current economic climate presents a great growth opportunity for Extreme Brandz, as consumers are constantly making trade-offs and looking for value when it comes to their dining options,” said Alex Rechichi, Co-Founder and CEO of Extreme Brandz. “While many consumers are downgrading from casual dining to QSR, they prefer not to compromise their choice in food. Good economy or bad, customers want to enjoy foods they crave without sacrificing freshness, nutritional value and taste.”

Norwell - John Palm recalls the moment clearly.

He had just worked out, he was hungry and he needed to eat — quickly.

Palm didn’t want to undue the calorie-burning work he’d just done in the gym, by downing fast food and fries.

He wanted something tasty, healthy and fast.

Many readers have likely experienced the same scenario.

Soon after that particular day, he learned from a franchise consultant about the fresh and healthy fast food chain, Extreme Pita, and considered opening one himself.

“It was one of the first times where [my wife Kathie] said ‘that’s a good idea’,” Jon recalled this week, when a Mariner reporter stopped by the Norwell eatery.

The Plymouth couple went for it, and Extreme Pita opened at 400 Washington St. back in February.

Kathie Palm said the restaurant has enjoyed success in its first year, selling hundreds of pitas in varieties including Grilled Chicken, Rustic Italian, Philly Cheese Steak and Falafel.

“[It’s been] awesome,” Kathie said. “People love it. Because it’s healthy, and fast and fresh. We have a lot of regular customers, a lot of people come in at least once a day.”

Though filling, Kathie said the pitas are not too heavy. The ingredients used are grilled, she added, but no grease or oil is used in the process.

Kathie said her own experience may serve as proof in the proverbial pita-pudding.

Eating many of the pitas for lunch and dinner since the restaurant opened in the winter, Kathie said she’s lost 35 pounds herself. Another factor, she joked, could be the 85-hour weeks she’s been putting in at the new business.

The caloric amounts of all the food they serve are posted on large, colorful signs in the store.

They also do catering, bringing pitas, salads and sides to your door.

The restaurant is open from 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. on Sundays.

For more information, call 781 659-PITA.

Feisal Ramjee knows a thing or two about business. At the age of 33, he not only owns the first Extreme Pita to come to Washington, but also the franchise rights to all future stores within the state. His first shop opened its doors to the Bothell community this past May.

Feisal plans to open shops in Monroe and Lake Stevens as well as two additional locations in Bellevue during the next six months.

With a degree in business and the experience of having owned four local franchises for a well-known sandwich shop, Ramjee jumped at the opportunity to introduce Extreme Pita to Washington. The Canadian-based company has some 230 stores in Canada and 30 in the U.S.

Ramjee hopes to grow that number over the next five years.

“I ate at an Extreme Pita during a trip to Canada and I was taken aback by the quality of the food and the overall concept,” he explained. “I knew right away that this was a product I could stand behind.”

Extreme Pita offers pita-style sandwiches with a variety of meats, sauces and fresh vegetables. The menu includes chef-inspired recipes, custom orders and vegetarian options including the falafel pita. The cooks use separate sides of the grill for meat and vegetables. Extreme Pita also includes fresh salads, flat baked pitas and soup. The price point ranges from $5 to $8.

“I think what is so great about Extreme Pita is that there is something on the menu for everyone whether you’re a meat lover or vegetarian,” he explained, pointing out that all vegetables are sauteed on the grill with water, not oil, for a healthier take on a quick and easy meal. “The best part is that it’s healthy.”

As the franchise holder for Washington, Ramjee views this business venture as an opportunity to grow a quality product while helping others find success in the industry.

“My goal is to find potential franchise owners who are willing to put in the hard work and reap the benefits of having ownership in a business,” he said. “I want to help others learn this business and secure a good future.”

Despite the uncertain economy, Ramjee remains confident in the growth of Extreme Pita in Washington.

“I get amazing feedback from the customers who walk through our doors,” he said, noting that the Bothell location turned a profit after only the third day of being open. “People are looking for something a little different, that is both affordable and healthy. They find it when they come in here.”
